It’s Official!

Just wanted to send it out to whoever’s listening… we are now Caye Caulker English…Congregation.

At the beginning of our Sunday morning meeting, Brother Hagerty said “Well, Brother Falk has the privilege of giving the first talk in the new Caye Caulker English Congregation”. Of course there was much sustained applause. The very next day Richard checked jw.org and sure enough, there it was! Now we can be responsible for ordering our own English literature and other convenient things 🙂

No Visit from Isaac ;)

Isaac was a ‘difficult, troubled child’, with ‘maybe a few other disorders’. I chuckled when I read those descriptions of ‘Isaac’, no, not my Isaac, he was none of the above, quite the contrary in fact. This is how Hurricane Isaac was described when he was just starting out. He was very unpredictable at first, but ended up choosing a path similar to Katrina in 2007. So, we had no visit from him. In the naming pattern for hurricanes, a female ‘J’ name had to come next and we thought it would be funny if it were ‘Joanna’. But actually, I learned something new in the process… they already have the names picked out in advance for every possible hurricane in the year. Of course it was ‘Jean’, not Joanna.

Looking at the projections for Isaac and at the one for the latest, ‘Lesley’, those of you in Nova Scotia could get some ‘whether’ from both of them! One from the backside and one from the Atlantic 😉

A visit from Isaac would have been wonderful… only,  ‘our’ Isaac, not the ‘difficult, troubled’ one!

Here’s a photo that my service partner, Donna, snapped while at Kelsey’s, one of my Bible Studies. How adorable is that?! She was totally absorbed like that through the whole hour that we studied with her sister! A future pioneer?!

We are really looking forward to finally having our district convention next week… the one you have all had already!

Til next blog,

over and out.

Delayed Reaction

It’s a lake outside our apartment!

So last night when the power didn’t go off and the thunder, heavy rains and wind did NOT come, though we waited up ’til 1am for it…and Ernesto had long past made landfall, I must admit I felt a little ripped off …not that I wished for destruction or anything… just a good ‘ol exciting storm, that’s all. Well, guess I don’t know anything about hurricanes… or maybe they’re just individually unpredictable, because, as you can see from the picture, we are NOW getting what I expected last night! I just took this after only about 15 minutes of the downpour that is still going on! There! Now I feel much better 😉

Guess the meeting will indeed be cancelled tonight, so I can take my time writing my talk for Friday instead. 😀

“Hurricane” Ernesto

The red dot is approximately where we are

This just in…Ernesto is now officially a hurricane. Good news is that he is now projected to track a little further north than before. Bad news is they’re now, once again, predicting it to be a category 2 before making landfall. The wind is really picking up here now. Larry decided to go stay at a hotel rather than stay in his upstairs aptartment which is wood, whereas our level is all cement.

Well, after all, it IS hurricane season… we expect this 🙂

We’ll keep you updated as things progress (pending power of course)

In Anticipation of Ernesto

Last night we had the first effects of Ernesto… around 3AM we were awakened by hard rain and a very loud crack of thunder… but that was it. This morning I checked the updates on Ernesto and it was still heading northwest toward Chetumal, Mexico which is right on the border of Belize. It is still anticipated to become a category 1 hurricane about 7PM tonight our time and make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula some time in the wee hours overnight . As I type the sky is darkening and rain is again beginning to fall. The wind is picking up and it feels so cool and fresh for a change… ahhhh… nice! Richard and Larry are busy putting boards on the windows upstairs. Ours were done first as you can see in the picture. The pioneer couple here, Donna and Rick get to have a ringside seat for the storm! They just moved into their waterfront house they just purchased last week. It is a cement octagon house and very well built for hurricanes and sits up high on cement stilts. They should feel safe and secure at the same time as having a great view of the swells that are likely to occur as the storm draws closer. As for us, we live on the middle street of Caye Caulker, so hopefully the most sheltered. We’re expecting a lot of rain and thunder with Ernesto, and possible some surging, but that should be it. So, no need to worry or anything, we’re just taking precautions and being prepared ‘just in case’. We’ll be in touch… power permitting 🙂
Oh yes, and if you click the ‘Live Webcam’ link to the right, you might be able to watch Ernesto with us.
