Just to Clarify

Ok, so when Richie saw my ’10 things I will miss’ he asked ‘what about our new friends and Bible students?’

So, just in case you are thinking the same thing, let me clarify: The 10 things were only pertaining to Ecuador, the country, not to our ‘Kingdom Interests’ here. Of course, the most important things here have been our ‘association of brothers’ and the ‘deserving ones’ in the Ecuadorian field that we’ve had the pleasure of working and studying with! The things on my list are things there won’t be in Belize, but we are sure to find even more friends in the ‘whole association of our brothers in the world’ serving in Belize as well as a whole new pasture to look for sheep in! 🙂

Well, only 2 days left in this house… so, I better get back to cleaning, sorting and packing!

10 Wills & 10 Won’ts

As our time here winds down and we’re out and about I find myself saying either ‘I’m going to miss that’ or ‘I’m sure not going to miss that’. So, I decided to share some of each with you.

Things I’ll Miss about Ecuador

  1. Being surrounded by the scenic green hills & mountains
  2. Adorable Quichua babies peeking out with wide, dark, innocent eyes.
  3. Ancient stucco Spanish architecture
  4. Making my way through the vegetable market on the way to a Bible study
  5. The ‘old’ Otavalo town square ‘Parque Bolivar’ before they ‘improved it’
  6. Renting a large awesome house with a fireplace for only $180/month
  7. Being greeted with ‘Buenos Dias’ or ‘Buenos Tardes’ on the streets by everyone who makes eye contact
  8. Seeing all the colourful handcrafts displayed everywhere
  9. Seeing oxen and/or pigs, etc. being led (or not) down the middle of the roads
  10. Walking cobblestone streets through picturesque ancient villages

Things I'll Miss

Things I Won’t Miss about Ecuador

  1. Being cold every time a cloud passes over and every evening from 4pm on
  2. Being gagged by clouds of black exhaust from the zillions of buses that don’t have pollution control devices
  3. Trying to appreciate how gorgeous it could be if it weren’t for all the trash spoiling every view
  4. Dodging excrement from dogs and… well, I won’t go there
  5. Trying to hold my breath while walking by certain long walls on the way to town (see 1Kings 14:10) 😉
  6. Terrifying rides on overcrowded, questionable buses with loco drivers through treacherous winding mountain passages
  7. Endlessly jumping through government hoops only to find there are brick walls on the other side
  8. The ‘too-tight’ and ‘too bare’ popular fashion.
  9. The mindset of most where there seems to be no concept of keeping an appointment or planning ahead for anything
  10. Constantly trying to evade the ubiquitous amoeba (and sometimes failing) 🙁

Of course, while we’re in this system of things, there will be ugly things about any place on Earth. Won’t it be wonderful when there won’t any longer be lists of ‘Things I won’t miss’ about any place!

Welcome Family & Friends

We’re so glad you dropped by to share a bit of our life adventures! The old blog at richardandginny.blogspot.com was originally to chronicle our adventures as we ‘served where the need was greater’ in Ecuador, but now that our adventures have pointed us in a new direction, we decided our blog would also. Hope you continue to have a share in our lives as we ‘work in the fields’ wherever they may be.

Below you’ll find all the posts that were made on the old blog! Can’t believe how easy it was to import them… at least *something* is easy these days! (eyeroll)

Also, this new site is much easier for you all to make comments (and we LOVE comments). I’ve set the options on this blog to not be found by search engines, so only friends and family with links to it will be able to find it. So, please, we want to hear your comments and news as well!

Tic Toc Tic Toc

>So, with only 3 weeks left before we leave… oops, probably haven’t mentioned yet that we booked our flight to Belize for March 31st, arriving in Caye Caulker, April 1st. So, as I was saying, only 3 weeks before we leave and we just found out that it is not a simple ‘sign some papers and go’ when it comes to dissolving a corporation. It takes months, lawyers and ‘muchos dineros’ (much money). Sigh… all we need on top of everything else right now!
On the up side, just after we knew we had to leave I got an email from a young brother who was to be moving here soon, along with his mom and dad (have all since arrived), asking if we knew if a certain sister still had an apartment for rent… well, she didn’t, but I didn’t hesitate to suggest a house for rent 😉
Yep, there is a pioneer sister moving here from Florida and she is going to take over renting our house, buy all our appliances and furniture *and* take over all my Bible Studies!
Still lots to do though and that clock just tics relentlessly on, but, soon all of this craziness will all be behind us and that turquoise Caribbean and ‘Go Slow’ motto of Caye Caulker will be welcoming us! Ahhhh

One ‘Door’ Closes – Another Opens!!

>

In case you’re confused by the date on the last post, it was supposed to be posted a couple of weeks ago… I just found it in the ‘drafts’ … sorry about that!
And now for something totally unexpected!
As you know, we’ve been expecting to receive word any day about Richard’s and Isaac’s work visas (I already received mine back in October). Well, the Ecuadorian board of labor decided to put up another hoop… with a brick wall on the other side! The lawyer sent word that when she attempted to get the final approval for Rich and Isaac, there had been a change of personnel in the board of labor… new supervisor in charge of these decisions… and he informed her that we need to come up with another $12,000 investment in our Ecuadorian Corporation or it could not continue… thus no visas for Richard (owner of the corp.) or Isaac (president of the corp.). Thus, if they can’t get visas then when October comes around, I (general manager) will not be able to renew mine either! Needless to say, this is totally out of our capabilities to comply with, soooo…
What were we to do now?! It was clear to us that there is no other option to allow us to stay in Ecuador. So… ‘to the mattresses’ as they would say in ‘the Godfather’ (haha). Don’t worry… we actually went ‘to Jehovah’ in prayer. Now, this could have been a very hard fall and of course we were in a state of shock and confused… why would this happen when we were doing so great here… Rich being appointed an elder… so many studies started… the English group so close to being a congregation! … then this?!
Well, after much prayer, what came to mind for me was this: Only a few days earlier, Rich bumped into a sister who is the daughter of the elder who died in Caye Caulker, Belize (partly the reason the congregation there was dissolved and we could not go there)… remember Caye Caulker was our initial destination to go and serve where the need was greater. Anyway, she told Richard that her step-mom (Carol Pugh) was going back there and that an English group had once again been formed. So, we have been in contact with Carol, who put us in touch with the (only) elder and his wife there. Getting excited yet? We are! Because we just received an email from them (Larry and Dianne are their names) which totally confirmed our feelings that this looked like Jehovah’s direction! Here are some highlights:
  • they, like us had been planning to move to Caye Caulker then, only 2 days before their move date, they found out about the English congregation being dissolved and merged into the Spanish cong. They went anyway,  hoping to still be of help, but found it too difficult to learn Spanish and after 4 months decided to move to the neighbouring island of San Pedro where there is and English congregation.
  • In November of 2011 they were requested by the C.O.  to move back to Caye Caulker because the few English speaking publishers there (mostly sisters – only one brother, newly baptized) were now an ‘unofficial group’ and needed an elder.
  • the 2nd week of January the C.O. sent a request to the branch for them to be made an ‘Official Group’.
  • C.O. told them that if another elder came he would recommend that they be made a congregation!
  • there are 10 publishers and many studies, some attending meetings (attendance for public talk/WT is usually between 25-35)
  • 2010 Memorial attendance (English only) was 74 despite no congregation for several months!
Now, as if all that isn’t exciting enough – one of the things that was really worrying us was knowing how much more expensive rents are in Caye Caulker than here in Ecuador. We had sent out a few feelers to different places that said they had discounts for long-term, but the cheapest thing we found was $500/month… then internet access on top of that, electricity, water, etc. So… read on in the highlights of the email from Larry and Dianne:
  • as of April 20th a furnished apartment is for rent in the 4-plex where they live…right next to the Kingdom Hall.
  • only $325/month including electric and water and wireless internet!
  • The email finishes with this encouragment: Jehovah works in miraculous ways for sure.  Here we have been praying for assistance so as to advance the Kings belongings, and why….an email shows up from Carol regarding your situation!  We do hope Caulker turns out to be the answer for you.”
  • ’nuff said 🙂

So  that’s our unexpected news. They are going to send us pictures of the apartment. It sounds very tiny, but hey, the original plan for Belize was to live on a boat, so…

So many new brothers and sisters have moved into our English group since we arrived here in Ecuador, so we don’t feel like we are abandoning it. There will be plenty of spiritually  minded teachers to take over our many bible students!

So, although the ‘door of opportunity’ we entered when we came to Ecuador has slammed shut… another has opened wide and it looks very inviting on the other side!
